1. mobivangelist: A (small-ish) Boom.fm update →

    mobivangelist:

Since we’ve come back from our Christmas break, the Boom.fm dev team has been busy. So we’ve just gone live with another update.

This wasn’t a particularly big one in terms of “what users get to see”; it was meant more to set the stage for our upcoming music shop by improving the way artists…

  3. Why you should move that button 3px to the left →

Designers notice the gap between functional and delightful, and that’s why we obsess over the little details.

  4. The Purpose →

We should care more about our craft because we’re granted an opportunity to contribute to the world. We should care more about what we say because each time we speak, there’s someone there to listen. We should care more about our audiences because they are the ones who give our work value. We might think that design work is about you or about me or anyone else who makes it, or maybe about the things that we make and the artifacts we produce, but don’t let this way of thinking fool you. The things we make are all just excuses to speak with one another and to help one another. We are all linked, and the things that we make for each other strengthen the invisible threads that tie us all together. There is a part of me that will always design for the joy of making it, but I now understand that the point of it all is not for me to enjoy myself, but for the ones using whatever I make to have some sort of wonder when doing so. We are in service to those that use what we make, to the ones that listen to what we say. We all may be little particles shooting through space with the potential to move faster than light, but design is a testament to our codependency. We are anchored to one another, so we all shift together. I can feel it in this room. And so I am glad to be here with you, in this far away place, anxious to make and to learn and to let my torch burn a little brighter. All it needs is more love.

  5. Design is a set of decisions about a product. It’s not an interface or an aesthetic, it’s not a brand or a color. Design is the actual decisions.

  6. 12 Steps to Writing Better Web Code →

If you start falling down on any of these steps, fix them first before going back to committing new lines of code. Not following these steps leads to frustration. Frustration leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to shitty projects.

Great slide deck by @rianvdm covering the basics of UX design.

  8. Asynchronous UIs - the future of web user interfaces →

Speed matters; a lot. Or to be precise, perceived speed matters a lot. Speed is a critical and often neglected part of UI design, but it can make a huge difference to user experience, engagement and revenue.

  9. Anyone who slaps a ‘this page is best viewed with Browser X’ label on a Web page appears to be yearning for the bad old days, before the Web, when you had very little chance of reading a document written on another computer, another word processor, or another network.
